Networking at the WinCC OA User Days in Bilbao

Once again this year, the WinCC OA User Days were a resounding success. Around 250 international customers and partners took up the invitation to attend the twelfth WinCC OA User Days in Bilbao. Participants had the opportunity to get to know the latest developments surrounding the SCADA system SIMATIC WinCC Open Architecture (WinCC OA). They also took advantage of the many opportunities offered to get together and exchange news and views with experts and other WinCC OA users on current topics and future challenges.

The event was opened by the Mayor of Bilbao Ibon Areso. Director of Factory Automation and Process Automation Alvaro Esteve welcomed the participants on behalf of the local host Siemens Spain. ETM CEO Bernhard Reichl provided an insight into the positioning of WinCC OA within the Siemens Company. His speech also focused on the challenges in the industrial environment and the topic Industrie 4.0. Bernhard Staufer, ETM’s Director of Sales & Marketing, spoke about the worldwide development of the SCADA market. He also introduced the latest WinCC OA Partners and presented a number of recently implemented special projects.

The new WinCC OA product video was then presented, which can be found on Youtube

Outlook of new features in Version 3.14
The annual meeting of experts focused predominantly on the new functions of the SCADA system WinCC OA in Version 3.14. WinCC OA Product Manager Lukas Schopp provided participants with an outlook of new features and enhancements they may look forward to be released in November this year.
The key aspect of the new version will be the native user interface for mobile devices, especially for Android and iOS. This user interface offers users full UI functionality on any mobile device – as a native application rather than using browser technology. This means that during engineering, operators no longer need to take into account what sort of terminal will be used to run the user interface. Already existing panels will also work on these devices. The UI behaves just like a normal app on mobile devices, is quick to install and an automatic distribution of project files is also included.

New features for the user interface, like an animation framework, device independent HMI (Responsive design), enhanced engineering usability, and some more, will be also part of the version. Another aspect of WinCC OA version 3.14 will be new drivers, such as for SIMOTION controller, an enhanced IEC 61850/61400 driver as well as a OPC DA HDA and OPC UA HA driver.
The functionality of historical data collection was also a focus point of the new version. The workflow was improved and so the first response time will be much faster and the load within the data manager will be reduced within version 3.14.
ETM’s Technical Director Elisabeth Bakany then delivered a presentation of research projects undertaken by ETM in cooperation with various institutions in the field of SCADA, and provided listeners with an insight into agile wave development in keeping with the lean principle.

Customer-specific solutions implemented by WinCC OA partners
Various WinCC OA partners then presented their WinCC OA projects implemented in fields ranging from energy supply to traffic, transport and infrastructure. During the breaks, participants had the chance to visit the partner exhibition and find out about some of the special solutions in greater detail.

Winding down with Rioja and pintxos
After a busy day taking in new information and exchanging ideas, participants were able to wind down at the end of the first day in a traditional Basque restaurant in the Bizkaia region. This followed a relaxed boat trip on the Nervion River, which afforded participants breathtaking views of Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum. Over a glass of excellent Rioja and pintxos, the WinCC OA Community found plenty of opportunity to catch up with existing contacts and make the acquaintance of new WinCC OA users.

Individual workshop program on day two
On the second day, participants were free to put together their own individual program from the wealth of possibilities on offer. Several workshops were run – from “Video functions in WinCC OA”, “Reporting with WinCC OA” and “Customizing with WinCC OA” to “The wonderful WinCC OA Simulator”. The workshop “What’s new in WinCC OA” offered the chance for experts to talk shop about current and new developments. Alongside the workshops, there were also two different reference site visits: One to the headquarters of gas supplier EDP Naturgas Energia and one to the Metro Bilbao headquarters.

The excellent feedback received from our customers and partners provided further confirmation that the WinCC OA User Days 2015 in Bilbao were a resounding success! We are already looking forward with anticipation to the WinCC OA User Days 2016 and hope to see you there!

We leave you with some great pictorial impressions of the WinCC OA User Days 2015.
